You should be budgeting for professional family photos every single year.

Have you ever heard a photographer say that out loud? Maybe not—but it’s something I believe deeply after years of documenting families in all seasons of life.

Yes, it’s an investment.

I get it. Booking a session is an investment, and your hard-earned money deserves to be spent wisely. There are real responsibilities: mortgages, groceries, childcare, and activities that naturally come first.

But let’s be honest for a second.

We all spend money here and there on things that don’t really matter in the long run. Those late-night online purchases that didn’t quite work out… the ones that sit in a drawer because we missed the return window. It happens to me. Does it happen to you?

And yet, we hesitate when it comes to something that actually grows in value over time.

Why Family Photos Matter More Than You Think

As a Carmel family photographer, I see every year how much can change in just twelve months.

Your baby doesn’t stay a baby.
Your toddler suddenly looks like a big kid.
The way your child reaches for your hand, the missing teeth, the little expressions you know so well… they all evolve.

This exact version of your family? It will never exist again.

That’s why documenting it matters.

Make It a Priority, Not an Afterthought

Family photos may not feel like a “necessity,” but I would argue they are incredibly important. These images become part of your family’s story. They’re what you’ll look back on, what your kids will hold onto someday.

When you plan for photos each year just like you would for vacations, holidays, or school activities. It takes the stress out of the decision. It becomes something you expect, value, and look forward to.

And instead of wondering “Should we do photos this year?”
It becomes “When are we doing them?”
